Frequently Asked Questions about Body Reshaping after Massive Weight Loss
Dr. Mark Peters, Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, Houma LA

Have you done many Body Reshaping Plastic Surgery procedures?
I have a very strong interest in massive weight loss patients and consider it one of my subspecialties. I am able to perform 3 to 4 procedures to remove excess skin for weight loss patients every month while balancing the demands of my cosmetic practice. I am Board Certified in Plastic Surgery and familiar with these procedures. More importantly, through experience and technique I have been able to deliver great results and significantly limit postoperative complications in my patients. Those are important statistics to evaluate.

I would like to do all of my Body Reshaping procedures at the same time. Is this possible?
It is understandable to be anxious when you are so close to the finish line. Most patients would like to get “as much done at one time as possible.” It would be irresponsible of me as a physician to approach the reconstructive process with anything other than your safety as the primary concern. It is up to me to assess the risks and benefits of multiple procedures for each patient. I will ask you to prioritize your concerns and then suggest a plan that can accommodate those goals. Typically we segregate areas of the body and attempt to limit the surgical time to 6 hours. In addition, we will strongly suggest overnight hospitalization to assure you are comfortable and stable before going home.

Will my insurance provide benefits for any of these body reshaping procedures?
Our experience is very few insurance companies cover removal of excess skin. Of all the procedures, the panniculectomy (removal of the skin hanging over the abdomen and groin area) is the most likely to be covered. Occasionally breast reduction will qualify for reimbursement. “Medical necessity” must be demonstrated in order for the insurance company to consider coverage. In the case of the abdominal panniculus, for example, rashes and repeat infections may result in their providing a benefit. It is prudent to assume no benefit and prepare financially so you are not disappointed. Our office can help you with financing these procedures through our partners. I strongly suggest that patients stay overnight at the hospital for most procedures.

Is the surgery very painful?
Pain tolerance is subjective. Some procedures are inherently more “painful” than others depending upon the muscles and nerves affected and the location and length of the incisions. Pain medications will significantly ease any discomfort you have. During our preoperative consultation, I will provide you with feedback I have received from patients who have undergone the same procedure(s.) In the majority of cases, our patients have reported less pain than they expected.

What type of anesthesia will be used?
The length of time in surgery usually dictates that general anesthesia be used.

What length leave of absence do I request from work?
This depends both upon the type of procedure(s) performed and the kind of work you do. The more physical your workday is, the longer it will be before you can safely return. Generally speaking, if you work in an office setting, body procedures will require 1-2 weeks off. Facial procedures such as facelifts or blepharoplasty (eyelids) surgery involve more of a “social” recovery—meaning while the physical discomfort may last 2 to 3 days, but your appearance may prevent you from wanting to be at work. In this case, the swelling and bruising usually subside in 10 to 14 days.

When can I drive?
Again, this depends upon the procedure(s) and any medication you are taking. Generally speaking, expect to wait 7 to 10 days before you are able to drive.

When can I resume sexual relations?
This is a common concern for patients and their spouses. It will be approximately 2 weeks before you will feel comfortable having sexual relations.

How much weight will I lose?
It is important to understand that these procedures are not designed as a vehicle for added weight loss, but as a method to remove troublesome excess skin. Many patients do not have a significant weight change from the initial loss realized from diet and exercise or bypass surgery. Having said that, I have removed skin that weighed 27 lbs., but that is the exception, not the rule.

Can you put me in touch with any of your former patients?
To the extent we are not violating any privacy issues, we are happy to introduce you to any former patients. You are also welcome to read the case studies we have published on the site.
